How do you install a Cambodia eSIM on your smartphone?

Step 1: Check compatibility and connect to Wi-Fi.

Make sure your smartphone is compatible with eSIM technology before starting the installation. Then connect your device to a stable, reliable Wi-Fi network to download the eSIM profile data.

Step 2: Access your phone's cellular settings.

Open the "Settings" application on your smartphone. Find and select the "Cellular Data", "Cellular Connection" or "Mobile Network" section to manage your plans.

Step 3: Start adding a new eSIM package.

In the cellular data section, press the "Add a cellular plan", "Add an eSIM" or "Add a data plan" option. This will initiate the process of installing your eSIM profile.

Step 4: Scan the QR code or enter the details manually.

Use your smartphone's camera to scan the QR code provided by your eSIM operator for Cambodia. If a scan is not possible, you can choose to manually enter the activation information (SM-DP+ address and confirmation code) provided to you.

Step 5: Activate and configure your new eSIM.

Follow the final on-screen prompts to finalize the installation and give your eSIM a name (e.g. "Cambodia"). Don't forget to activate mobile data for this eSIM and, if necessary, enable data roaming if you're already in Cambodia or once you've arrived.

Internet access in Cambodia

There are several options for staying connected in Cambodia, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs. Here are the main ways to get online in Cambodia:

  • Local SIM cards (Prepaid) :

This is by far the most common and economical solution for travelers. The main operators are Smart Axiata, Cellcard and Metfone. You can buy a prepaid SIM card very easily at the airport on arrival, in the operators' official stores or even in small shops and supermarkets.

    • Advantages :
      • A very low cost for large amounts of data.
      • Excellent network coverage in urban and tourist areas.
      • Allows low-cost local and international calls.
      • Easy to top-up almost anywhere.
    • Disadvantages :
      • Requires unlocked phone (unlocked).
      • You'll need to change your usual SIM card, which can be inconvenient if you need your main number.
      • Identification may be required for check-in.
  • eSIMs (Virtual SIM cards) :

If your phone is compatible, eSIMs are an excellent alternative. They enable you to activate a local data plan without the need for a physical SIM card. Platforms such as Airalo, Holafly and Nomad offer packages for Cambodia.

    • Advantages :
      • No need to change your physical SIM card; you can keep your main number active for calls/SMS.
      • Quick and easy activation, often even before arriving in the country.
      • Ideal for phones with a single physical SIM slot.
    • Disadvantages :
      • Generally more expensive than local physical SIM cards.
      • Mainly data-driven, local call and SMS options are rare or non-existent.
      • Not all phones are compatible with eSIM technology.
  • Wi-Fi Public and Hotel :

In cities and tourist areas, you'll easily find free Wi-Fi in hotels, cafés, restaurants and sometimes even in certain shopping malls or public spaces.

    • Advantages :
      • Often free of charge and accessible without any further action.
      • Practical for occasional or one-off use.
    • Disadvantages :
      • Signal quality and speed can vary widely, from excellent to almost unusable.
      • Less secure than private connections; it is not advisable to carry out sensitive banking transactions over an unsecured public Wi-Fi network.
      • Limited access to specific locations where the service is offered.
